Grenda led them to one of the abandoned boathouses they'd visited that morning, close to the docks. It was a large, dilapidated structure with a tall, pitched roof and walls formed of large sheets of metal plating that trembled in the wind. When Cam, Tep Tep and Kildo had crept inside earlier poking around, they hadn't found more than garbage and old sailing equipment left to rot. There had been no boats and no sign that anyone had even been inside for years. It had seemed like a terrible place for a secret hideout, but then Cam knew very little about that sort of thing, having never lived anywhere but the Jedi temple on Coruscant, at least after he was taken in by the Order. Apparently, they'd missed something.
Standing on the threshold of the narrow side door, Cam waited until Grenda slipped into the shadowy interior of the building and then glanced at the others. Wordlessly, he patted his lightsaber hilt. They both nodded.
He turned and followed Grenda inside. There was every chance that this was an ambush, and they were walking right into it. But they had to know, and Cam's every instinct told him that the answer lay inside. Now that they knew the mysterious kadawa of legend hadn't really manifested like the locals feared, but that the so-called sightings of it were, in fact, glimpses of the Drengir, he felt a step closer to understanding what was really going on. He hadn't had time to think about what that meant. He wasn't sure he wanted to think about it just yet. The Drengir had been hungry. The implication was obvious. And yet, Cam knew, deep down, that Master Byre was still alive. He would have felt her absence in the Force. So he pressed on.
All he knew was that Grenda was leading them to the Hurricane's base, and soon he'd have more answers. If that brought them closer to figuring out what had happened to Master Byre and the others, then it was worth the risk.
Grenda crossed the floor of the abandoned boathouse. It was dark, the only light, silvery and thin, slanting in through the shattered upper windows. She stopped in the center of the echoing space and used the edge of her boot to scrape away a heap of dirt and bits of broken wood, revealing a metal sheet on the ground. She reached down and grabbed it, straining, as she dragged it aside. Beneath it, stone steps led into a yawning opening.
Cam couldn't believe they'd missed something so simple. They'd been so fixated on the idea that the gang was operating from inside one of the boathouses that he had failed to consider they might have been hiding beneath it. It should have been obvious. Most of these sorts of buildings had large construction pits for working on the bottoms of the boats they housed. The gang had clearly disguised it and were using the large pit as their hideout.
Grenda ushered them toward the steps, but Kildo shook his head.
